The bond to the Lord Rahl was created in the Great War by Alric Rahl, the very first Lord Rahl. It was created as a way to counter and protect those loyal to the holder of the bond from the influence of the dream walker. The Agiels of the Mord-Sith work only through the existence of a Lord Rahl. True blooded D'Harans, the original targets of the bond, can sense the direction and location of the Lord Rahl. Those that take on the bond, but are not pureblooded D'Harans, do not feel that, although some may feel it faintly, but not as strong as those who are pure of blood. All that take on the bond, however, are protected from the dream walker. The bond also ensures the birth of a gifted Rahl, so to every Lord Rahl a gifted heir is born. But the balance to this is also the birth of the pristinely ungifted.
