Jessup was one of the horses used by Richard and Verna to return to the Palace of the Prophets. He was named, by Richard, after one of the main characters from The Adventures of Bonnie Day.

Technically, Jessup was one of Sister Verna's mounts. After Richard destroyed the horses' spade bits, which he said were unnecessary and cruel, he forced Sister Verna to groom and care for Jessup.

Jessup was a bay gelding and, rather than being the stallion in charge, deferred to the lead mare's authority. Though Sister Verna was initially displeased that Richard forced her to take care of Jessup, she eventually loved the horse and began to appreciate his faithful service to her. After returning to the Palace of the Prophets, Sister Verna threatened to expel a stableboy who had whipped Jessup.
