Kahlan is a very beautiful, tall woman with intelligent green eyes. She wears her brunette hair longer than any other woman in the Midlands, as she holds the highest rank of all. Being the Mother Confessor, she is usually dressed in her white Mother Confessor's dress, though she is not averse to wearing traveling clothes. Despite having grown up in the beautiful Confessors' Palace, Kahlan is far from rude or arrogant. She longs for peace and for the freedom of all the people of her land. Kahlan is capable of being ruthless to those who have committed treason or who are allied with the Imperial Order. Kahlan is adept at hiding her emotions behind the face of a Confessor.

Confessors have no friends, bar other Confessors, and all her life Kahlan longed to have a friend who loved her for her. Kahlan's lifetime wish became a reality when she met her future husband, Richard Rahl. Soon after, Kahlan made many friends and no longer felt the loneliness of being born a Confessor.

[edit] Early Life

Kahlan's mother, the Mother Confessor at the time, chose King Wyborn Amnell of Galea as her mate, to be the father of her daughter. Kahlan's mother took him with her power and the mating eventually produced Kahlan. Before she gave birth to Kahlan, her mother met with a powerful sorceress named Adie, who gave her a necklace to helped to protect Kahlan while she was in the womb. Adie would become an ally of Kahlan's in her future struggle with the Imperial Order.

As Kahlan grew, her mother ordered her father to spend time with her and to teach her about war, tactics, and swordsmanship. He did this readily, as he would any job he was ordered to do, by the Mother Confessor. Thus Kahlan became proficient in military matters, as is seen in Blood of the Fold. In addition, along with the other Confessor children, Kahlan studied with the wizards at the Wizard's tower in Aydindril.

However, while Kahlan was yet a young girl, a terrible sickness took her mother, and her father died from the shock of his mistress' death. After this the mother of Dennee, took on the role of Kahlan's mother, thus she and Dennee became something like sisters.

The Confessor's Magic in Dennee was frail as was Dennee herself. Denee was greatly pained by the process of taking confessions. Kahlan would do anything to spare Dennee pain. When it came time for them to take confessions, Kahlan would often go in Dennee's place. These confessions often haunted Kahlan afterwards, but she eventually learned to deal with them, as her mother taught her, and as all Confessors must.

One day Kahlan went to take a confession in Dennee's place. When she was returning home she heard a moaning from the bushes on the side of the road. On investigation, she discovered Dennee, lying broken in the bushes. Dennee had fallen victim to a quad, a group of four men sent by Darken Rahl to kill Confessors. Dennee was beyond healing and Kahlan stayed with her until she died. After this incident, Kahlan wanted to use her power to intervene, to hurt and to kill those who had killed her sister. Kahlan buried the necklace given to her mother by Adie, with Dennee who had always been fond of it.

When all the Confessors had been brutally murdered, bar Kahlan, the remaining five wizards decided to act. They realised that the only one who could save the Midlands was the old First Wizard. They cast a web over Kahlan that allowed her to pass through the Boundary to Westland, and charged her to find the First Wizard. After doing this, they killed themselves, to preserve the secret of Kahlan's mission

[edit] Current Role

Kahlan appears in the following books in the Sword of Truth series; Wizard's First Rule, Stone of Tears, Blood of the Fold, Temple of the Winds, Soul of the Fire, Faith of the Fallen, Pillars of Creation, Naked Empire, Chainfire, Phantom and Confessor.

[edit] Wizard's First Rule

After crossing through the boundary, Kahlan happens upon Richard Cypher, a woods guide, and the main character of the series. Richard had spotted four men not far behind her. With his help, they were able to kill the four men and escape.

Richard took Kahlan into the Westland to meet his friend, Zedd, as Richard was falling ill from a poisonous sting he had recieved. Zedd healed Richard from the sickness, and Richard, using his intuitive powers, uncovered Zedd's Secret, that Zedd is the First Wizard, who Kahlan was hunting for. Kahlan asked Zedd to name a new Seeker, to help in the fight against Darken Rahl. Zedd eventually named Richard to be the new Seeker, giving him the Sword of Truth.

Kahlan led Richard out of the Westland through a pass in the boundary. On the way, at the boundary, they met Adie, the sorceress.

[edit] Chainfire

As the book Chainfire begins, Richard wakes to find Kahlan missing and that no one else remembers who she was. He fruitlessly attempts to jog everyones mind so that they could remember her. He then leaves the Old World to speak with Shota to find the answer to what had happened to Kahlan. In trade for the Sword of Truth, the only information he receives is the word Chainfire, that what he seeks is long buried, to beware the viper with four heads, and that he must find the place of the bones in the Deep Nothing. He then travels to the Wizard's Keep and spends time there trying to figure out his next step.

It is then revealed in the book that Kahlan had been kidnapped and made a "slave" to four Sisters of the Dark who had cast the very dangerous spell, Chainfire. The effect of the spell made everyone in the world (except Richard and the three Sisters) forget who Kahlan was and that she even existed. If anyone saw her, they immediately forgot that they had seen her. At one point, Kahlan and the Sisters of the Dark arrive at the People's Palace and the Sisters force Kahlan to go after the Boxes of Orden. After bringing the first box out, she is sent back in for the other two. With no more room in her bag for both of the final two boxes, Kahlan is forced to leave behind the small statue that Richard had carved for her, Spirit.

[edit] Phantom

After one of the four Sisters of the Dark is sent ahead with the first box, Kahlan and the Sisters arrive at a farm house seeking shelter when the man notices and remembers Kahlan.

[edit] Strength of Confessor's Magic

Main Article: Confessor

A Confessor's Magic is the power of love. A Confessor must only release her restraint on her power, while touching a person and then that person will do her bidding. The lengths one who has been touched will go to for the Confessor depends on the strength power of a Confessor. Once a Confessor has used her power, it will usually take a day and a night to return.

Kahlan is different, however. Once she has used her power it takes around two hours for it to return, proving her to be one of the most powerful Confessor's in history. With but a command Kahlan is able to cause one who she has touched to immediately die, something few other Confessor's have ever been able to do.

A Confessor has a second element to her power. She is able to call upon the Con Dar or the "Blood Rage" in defense of one she loves. While in the Con Dar a Confessor doesn't need to be touching a person to take them with her power and it takes no time at all to recover it. A Confessor is also able to produce very powerful blue lightning when in such a state. However this power can only be taught by ones mother.

Because Kahlan's mother died before she could teach Kahlan of the Con Dar, it was thought that she would never be able to use this element of her power. However under the trauma of believing the one she loved was dead Kahlan was able to bring the Con Dar out of herself to try and seek retribution. She has since used this side of her power several times.

[edit] Kahlan in Prophecy

Main Article: Kahlan Amnell in Prophecy

Being very important to the war that has started to brew against the Order, Kahlan has been referred to many times in many different prophecies. She is often referred to as "the one in white", a referrance to the white dress the Mother Confessor wears.

In Wizard's First Rule, Zedd tells Kahlan she is in the books of prophecies as, "The Last Mother Confessor."

In Chainfire, a book called Collected Origins is revealed to be completely about Kahlan.
