Maternity spell

A maternity spell is a spell linking the victim to the caster. A cord of magic connects the two people, and sustains the life of the victim. If the link is broken without great care, from a close distance, the victim will die. While linked, anything that happens to the caster will happen to the victim, and the caster will always be able to sense that the victim is alive on the other end. This spell requires great power and skill to perform and because the link has to be maintained at all times, constantly drawing on the casters magical power (Han), it prevents the caster from performing even the simpliest of magics. Nicci, who is considered very powerful, comments to Richard that while maintaining the link she could not "even make a spark" because of the demands of the maternity spell.

Nicci used this spell on Kahlan Amnell to convince Richard Rahl to come with her to the Old World. It was taught to Nicci by the venerated Sister of the Light, Lidmilla.
