Richard is a tall, well built man in his mid-twenties. He inherited the good looks of his father, Darken Rahl though his are not the cruel perfection of a statue as his father's were. He has deep gray eyes and coarse brown hair. He once wore the simple clothes of a woods guide, but has since been known to wear extravagant robes worn by a great wizard from the time of the great war.

Richard possesses unlimited patience, but little tolerance. He believes that it is the right of all people to be free and that they must step up and fight for that freedom, not rely on others to do the job for them.

Being the Seeker, Richard is prone to asking questions with overwhelming precision. He has much experience in the role of the Seeker and has gained himself the respect of the people of the New World, not just because he is the Lord Rahl, but because he is a man with an honorable agenda.

[edit] Early Life

Richard Rahl was raised believing his name was Richard Cypher. Raised by the man, George Cypher, he also believed that he had a brother named Michael Cypher. Richard's mother married George Cypher after Richard was born, thus Richard was raised as George's son.

Richard grew up in Westland, a land to the west of the boundaries. With the teachings of his father and the man he knew as his best friend, Zeddicus Zu'l Zorander, Richard eventually became a wood's guide while Michael became an important political figure in Westland.

As Richard grew up, his father had him learn the words to a book, the Book of Counted Shadows. Richard had to read the book and memorize the words. Richard didn't mind this, feeling honored that his father chose him for the job. Eventually, after many years of studying the book, George asked Richard to write out the entire book, without making any error. When he succeeded at this multiple times, knowing that the secret knowledge of the book was safe with Richard, George burnt the book.

When Richard was young, his mother was caught in their house during a fire and died, but only after rescuing Richard and Micheal first.

From then on, Richard would help Zedd whenever he could and became friends with the likes of Dell Brandstone, who he would come to call Chase. He honed his skills as a wood's guide, becoming at home in the forest.

[edit] Wizard's First Rule

Richard found out that George Cypher had been murdered and sets out to find out the truth about what had happened. He found a dried up vine in a jar that only he and George knew about. Setting out to find the source of this vine, Richard found himself in the Upper Ven where he found the vine. However, getting too close to the vine, the vine actually bit him, getting a piece of itself inside the bite.

Before he was able to set off to fix the bite, Richard noticed a woman unknowingly being chased by four men. After Watching them for a minute, Richard rushed forward to intercept the woman without the men knowing of it. He takes her to a sidepath, hoping that the four men will keep following the road. Near the end of the path, however, the four men have catched up to Richard and the woman. With the help of the woman, who he finds out is named Kahlan, he disposes of the four men and continues on to take her to his home.

[edit] Richard Rahl in Prophecy

Main Article: Richard Rahl in Prophecy

Richard is a core figure in prophecy. It is mentioned throughout the series that there are many books of prophecy that are about Richard and the war he fights.

Towards the end of Wizard's First Rule, Richard names himself "the bringer of death". In Stone of Tears, Richard does learn of a prophecy that mentions "the one that names himself the Fuer grissa ost drauka", or the bringer of death in High D'Haran.

In Chainfire, Ann and Nathan mention that there are several books that are mainly about Richard. However, many of these books were missing sections because those parts referred to Kahlan Amnell.

[edit] Known Relatives

Note: Richard's mother (Zedd's daughter/George Cypher's wife) is a prominent figure in Richards upbringing and plays much into who Richard is, as well as the story much later in the series, yet is never properly named.

[edit] Notable Quotes

  • "Blade, be true this day."
  • "Dance with me death, for I am ready."
