The Sword of Truth is a sword that is carried by the Seeker of Truth. The sword has the power to cut through anything perceived as the enemy while not harming a friend. The only exception to this was a sword forged from 100 bloody tips of the armory of the Palace of the Prophets. The Sword of Truth draws on the rage of the one wielding it, but can be turned white and, when used with love and forgiveness, can slay even a friend. However, only the true Seeker can turn the blade of the Sword of Truth white.
In order to use the blade, the wielder must be able to release their anger. If they are not able to release their anger the sword will still work but the price may be their life. The Sword of Truth gives the Seeker a test of pain the first time the Seeker kills with the sword. After many years of usage, the sword wears the Seeker down and eventually turns the wielder into a shadow (or monster) of him/her former self. Only the true Seeker, the one who can turn the blade white, will not wear down in this fashion and remain as he/she is.
The true Seeker of Truth is Richard Rahl and is the one that turned the blade of the Sword of Truth white. Richard Rahl does not need the sword in hand to call upon the power for the swords power is just a mirror of his own. In fact, the Sword helped teach him about his gift as a war wizard and magic in general. The memories of its past wielders, when unlocked by Richard, teach him the "Dance with Death" that is characteristic of life, war, and magic. Zedd explains that the sword does not make the Seeker and in the end all the sword is a tool. However, he gave up the sword in Chainfire in exchange for information. Samuel, the Seeker before Richard, wields the sword until he is killed in Confessor.
The Sword of Truth is the key to the Boxes of Orden. When held over a box, the blade turns either white or black. By striking the box over which the blade turns white, the wielder can gain the power of Orden. The implication of the prophecies in the books is that the Sword was made for this purpose and, therefore, was made for Richard who was prophecied to be the one to unlock the power of Orden.
The Sword of Truth is a symbol similar to a king's crown or the Mother Confessor's white dress it reveals to other people that the wearer is the Seeker of Truth, a law unto himself.
