It's quite obviously not the last book. Most likely not even the death of Richard. Lets face it way to much has been left unfinished for any reasonable author/publisher to leave it hanging. Especially when they know they have quite a fan base willing to pay for more.
Also any author stupid enough to have such a beloved character die in such a way that even his Soul will be obliterated is just asking for a lynching. He would never again be able to walk safely in public because peopl take this way to seriously. Having him die saving a loved one and go to his eternal reward is one thing, but sending him to something worse then Hell is another.
Plus, let us not forget about Jax. Unless Kahlan takes another mate, which I have a hard time believing, the very fact of Jax's existence would seem to prove that Richard must come back somehow, or else father her ancestors from the Underworld.
Jax said in The Law of Nines that the house of Rahl in their world suddenly vanished. It could mean that Richard's death was the reason. It is possible that Kahlan did take another mate and Nathan decided not to have an heir (or at least did not have a gifted heir). Jax doesn't really prove Richard came back somehow since she had the last name Amnell, not Rahl. It only proves Kahlan had a child and carried on the Amnell family line.
Although the same book says that the Lord Rahl-during-the separation-of-the-worlds' (Richard's) victory over the Fellowship of Order ushered a Golden Age long after they won the war. I don't think the word being overrun by Arc and Sulachan's Half-People and zombies would be considered a Golden age, so I doubt it's the last book; And regardless whether Richard lives or dies, it seems Kahlan, if not Richard(coming back from the dead), would somehow be victorious against the Dark Duo - ushering that Golden age and keeping the Amnell line, thus Jax.
Yes, it can't be the last book, weather or not Richard comes back. Hannis Arc heading for the People's Palace, Cara is missing, the world faces it's greatest danger of the whole SOT series...no, it can't end that way. As Jax says a Golden Age followed Lord Rahl's victory there has to be a defeat of Hannis Arc and his army of zombies and half-people. Could Terry intend Kahlan to somehow trick Hannis Arc into getting Sulachan to bring Richard back, so he can grovel at his feet? That's one idea. Richard's body is preserved, is that a clue? There is no way an author is going to kill his leading character, leave another, Kahlan, totally in the lurch, and another loved one, Cara, never to be heard from again, after she went to do something, what it was we never discovered. Too many loose ends, quite apart from the fact that there would be a fan uproar if he just left the whole story up in the air, sort of 'figure out your own ending'. Terry is far too good a writer to do that. Kahlan could go on without Richard to defeat Hannis Arc I suppose, she has been a greater general after all than Richard himself when she led the D'Haran army, and maybe whatever it was Cara thought more important than staying with Lord Rahl - a surprising thing for her to do - could have something to do with it. Maybe Vikka does something to chuck a spanner in Hannis Arc's works too, since she tried to help Richard as best she could, protecting Samantha and telling her where Zedd and the others were being held. Whatever happens, I think we can expect another book. There HAS to be one, or severed Souls will be the most monumental unresolved cliff-hanger of all time.
I think there is little to no chance that this is the end for Richard, and certainly not the end of the series either. My theories involve either Zedd's spirit, or the Temple of the Winds. Goodkind very specifically brought up the fact that the missing pages of Regula are in the Temple in the underworld. I'm not certain of how all the details will work out, but my guess is that it will either be Zedd or the Temple of the Winds that plays into Richard's resurrection.

Just FYI The Temple of The Winds is no longer in the underworld. Richard brought it back with the Boxes of Orden at the end of Confessor. Otherwise I agree it would have been the perfect setup for him to gain acess to the book as we know spirits can go there without all the problems getting their normally would pose.
I found the ending to this book to be actually physically upsetting, it made me want to be sick. I remember being tempted to fling the book out into the rain when I had finished, in disgust and horror. However, I do admire it as a brilliant course of action from the author. Whether or not Richard is returned to the world of life, at the moment Terry Goodkind has us all on his mind, and will do until he releases his next book. I have read a great many stories, but none have quite captured my imagination as the works of Goodkind. Whilst he may sometimes allow these sorts of things to happen within his world, I highly doubt he would kill Richard off forever. There are a good many ways he could bring Richard back, and I believe he will. Why else go to the effort of having Kahlan see that his body was preserved? If he wanted Richard to remain dead, why write that in? Why else save the pair of them at every turn, sometimes too conveniently, if not to lead them to some form of a happy ending?
My guess is that when Commander Fister goes to get the sword for Kahlan, he discovers Richard's body is gone. The next book will be the main cast looking for him while returning to the palace, and a separate arc with Richard wandering around in some sort of souless, half zombie amnesia state. This way we can have another giant book where nothing of consequence happens for 80% of it.
I have been afraid to read it - both because I am afraid of being disappointed in the writing as so many people have said they were, and also because I am working up the courage to read about the death of some characters I love.
When Richard was stabbed with *his* sword, was it glowing with magic? If so, did the magic produce the hissing white blade or a combination of white and dark in the blade?
I know that Emperor Sulachan and the Keeper had somewhat of an understanding (supposedly) and yes this is merely speculation, but I am none too sure that the Keeper wants to share power, specifically in his own realm and the fact that Hannis Arc has these "Occult Powers" and not much is known about them, but I was just wondering if these powers are so terrible that the Keeper wants to see them gone and sends Richard back himself. Also Jax in the Law of Nines mentioned a "coven" of thirteen witches... It could also be possible that Shota and twelve other witches use their mysterious powers to bring him back or to fight with Kahlan and Nicci. Or perhaps only Shota uses her powers to bring him back.
I also haven't read the book yet...Richard has been a larger than life character to me, with his devotion to Free Will helping focus my own ideals, so the idea of him dying...terrible...however, reading this thread was nice, knowing that he probably isn't dead ad eternum...
When I read the book i thought that they either would use Another person maybe sacrifcing nicci to retrive Richards soul, or if a mord sith could use the "breath of Life" to bring him back. I guess it could be a tragedi, but i Hope that there will be Another book. They preserving his body kinda gave me that but when kahlan talked about funeral pyr it vanished.
Heya, guys. Althought I have not yet finished the book, I have read some spoilers and I know how Richard dies.
There are a couple of things that do make me think he will somehow come back to life and here they are:
1. At some point, before Zedd was killed, Richard said "If I have to come back from the dead to fight for our people, I will" No one said a word against the grim finality of his vow. Y'all have read all the books. Ever seen Richard vow to do something and not do it? I don't think so.
2. In the Temple of the Winds, Richard was actually dead and by using the Chimes, Kahlan was able to revive him, so, even though I doubt they'll unleash the Chimes again, there must be another way to do what was done before - bring him back from the dead.
3. (This is my own theory) Richard wasn't killed by the poison in him. Nicci killed him. Although the dark ones have him, I think because he was killed by Nicci, he won't be as weak as he would have been if he'd died by the poison. Maybe he'll somehow manage to defeat them, using some newly found power in the Underworld. Afterall, as I mentioned, he's the bringer of death. The bringer of death in the underworld. His real home.
i love this book and can't believe this is the last one, it's not possible. my theory for Richard to come back to life will have to do with samantha. we all know she has a crush on Richard so i think when she finds out about him is will come and try to see him and Kahlan will explain everything. i think Samantha probs has occultar power like her mum and will somehow be able to save Richard.
That IS why there is a Rahl in the "unmagical world" that part was never contested, what we would be trying to figure out would be the existance of Jax Amnell, whom as logic would dictate to be Kahlans descendant, and whether or not Kahlan took another mate.
Cyrilla Amnell was the Queen of Galea after her mother, Queen Bernadine Amnell. Cyrilla was sister to Harold Amnell, who served as the general over the armies of Galea, and half-sister to Kahlan Amnell.,possible someone from this line had a few relatives other than the royal ones.
Yes but Jax was also implied to be a Confessor, of which Kahlan was the last. Also since no other Amnell has been mentioned even slightly besides the three, two of whom now lie dead, it isn't logical to assume that she was someone elses descendant.
Richard is in the underworld to bring back the dead? All those half people need fixing, him going wasnt just to help khalan, but establishing a way that coming back will correct the imbalance and allow them to die properly with souls, possibly some connection to the original souls severed in the great war returning.
- He finds out that Emperor Sulachan is the Keeper reincarnated, from his father Darken Rahl, & grandfather Panis Rahl who was responsible for assassinating Hannis Arc's entire family.
Richard is then rescued by Zedd as he brings him from the brink of enternal darkness of the Underworld back into the Light in Creation.
With Richard now in the rift of between two worlds...
-He finds out that Merritt, Naja Moon, Alric Rahl, Zedd & Baraccus all sacrficed themselves for the Final Prophecy.
-He learns from Merritt, The Bond of Rahl, Con-Dar & Sword of Truths levels
-Naja Moon - Shows Richard the missing grace of Regula
-Alric Rahl Informs Richard that Nathan Rahl was a second born gifted son to the Lord Rahl of his time and was only allowed to live because his gift was prophechy base, Nathan was then sent as a guest to the Palace of the Prophets to be raised in secret. Also that Nathan Rahl has a gifted son, named Alexander who was banished to the world without magic, by Shota!
-Zedd then confessed that Richards mother did not die in the house fire, afterwards he sent her through the boundry for practicing wicca, she walked into the Vale his mom and exited the other side in Agaden Reach as Shota.
-Baracuus helped Richard unlock his gift as a War Wizard
Kalhan goes to find Richard for a pyre, a funneral fit for a Lord Rahl but his body is missing, she knows only one person could be responsible for this, Shota!
She eventually finds Shota and the Coven of 13 Witches as they are conjouring a spell that brings Richard back from the dead with his soul intact. Red is part of the Coven with Samantha by her side, who is forgiven by Lord Rahl.
Now back from the dead Richard once again holds the Sword of Truth, while channeling his Gifit as a War Wizard. With Kahlan on his right side and Nicci his left side followed by the remaining members of the First File along with three new Mord Sith and a Scribe they head to Peoples Palace as an unstopable force!
Back at the Peoples Palace Nathan Rahl has engaed Hannis Arch & Emperor Sulachan in a fierce battle with the entire force of the D'Haran Army vs a Infinate Hord of half people. Nathan knowing that his time is coming to an end and his gift is failing, looks out over the battle field and he see's Wizards fire a mile long, and that instant he knew it was a War Wizard! With a smile of his face he was crushed to death by the occult powers of Hannis Arc.
The Bond of Rahl returns to Richard, as he desimates all of the remaining half people with one last burst of War Wizard Fire leaving only Hannis Arch & Emperor Sulachan. He guides the D'Haran army with his bond and they seperate Hannis Arc, Kahlan now in full control of her Con-Dar, as she disables Hannis Arc occult magic long enough for them to force him onto the final grace of regula drawn by the scribe Mohler. Killing him instantly! Emperor Sulachan has nowhere to go and is being bitzed attacked by Nicci with her subtractive magic, that is having very little effect. Richard makes eye contact with Kahlan then Nicci who then stops her attack. He turns the sword white gathers all of the memories of previous Seekers and begins the Final Dance with Death strikes down the Emperor with War Wizards Life Fire. Sulachan falls to dust, while the Keeper shadow is banished back to underworld once and for all. With Richard final sacrifice with the bond to Rahl destroyed it breaks the final link ending prophecy.
With the war now over Kahlan and Nicci finally understing that this was Richards destiny as the Seeker Of Truth,
Cara with Berdine follow behind Nydia, Rikka, Cassia, Laurine & Vale All of the Mord Sith were wearing their red leathers. They all knelt before the Mother Confessor, Cara said we are honoring the last request of Lord Rahl. He wished for a new era for D'Hara Queen Kahlan Amnell the ruler of D'Hara and Mother Confessor from the old world to the new. Will you be our magic vs magic so we can be your steel vs steel? Kahlan says, yes!
"Queen Amnell guide us. Queen Amnell teach us. Queen Amnell protect us. In your light we thrive. In your mercy we are sheltered. In your wisdom we are humble. We live only to serve. Our lives are yours"
after the third time through a smile can across all of the faces of the Mord Sith as they can feel their Queens Con-Dar powering their Aigels one again. "The Bond of Amnell" along with return of Prophecy.
The Con-Dar is magic drawn from connection to the ones they love.
All of a sudden the Sword of Truth begins flying all over the place, and ends up in the hand of Zedd who happens to be standing right next to the good spirit of Richard. Kahlan runs to him and they embrace transporting them to a rift between worlds, They in turn show their love for each other uniting as one. Richard said my last gift to you Kahlan Amnell is a piece of me and piece of you combined. A Rahl Kahlan asked? No Richard replies Amnell!
9 months later to the delight of Shota, Jax Amnell was born the first ever War Sorceres & Confessor
That's last post...wow.
there were to part that came to my midn as well
1) getting saved by Zedd.
2) being that hwo to controle his powers ( probably bt Barracus).
But I don't see the rest. Sulachan being the Keeper reincarnate? Shota being his mother? Bonded to a non Rahl, lett alone a non-gifted non-Rahl
I also don't believe this serie will end with the next book.
My guess is that in the next book we see a stand of D'Hara against the forces and Richard in the underworld.
maybe he will even master Ocult forces or learn the balance against the occult (if the gift can't even touch the occult it's not balanced).
Remember the sword still holds Magda's life force. 'As long as you live you will share a share a connection with the sword. I guess you could say as long as it EXISTS it carries some of you.' We also know the swords power reached Richard in the underworld. Finally the first confessor Magda literally had to die and be reborn to become a confessor. Done so using the sword in a 'black' state.
