Synopsis[]
Richard Cypher, a woods guide in Westland wanders in the Upper Ven forest after his father was mysteriously murdered three weeks ago. He is drawn to a strange plant which actively attacks and wounds him. He recognises the plant from a cutting in his father's message jar. He uses his knowledge of his environment to soothe the wound with aum. A large red object flies over the forest, but by the time Richard arrives at a vantage point, the object is too far away to identify. He recalls his brother Michael Cypher will be throwing a celebration that night for his acceptance of position of First Councilor. From his position overlooking Trunt Lake and Hawker's Trail, he sees four men hunting a woman in a dress.
